In real estate, it’s location-location-location. In baseball, replace ‘location’ with ‘pitching’ — which makes the Pitching Coach position so important.

Greg Frady, the Head Coach of the Nanaimo NightOwls (and, sometimes, Bars!), is proud to introduce Mike Spears as the team’s first pitching coach, leading that area when the NightOwls make their West Coast League debut in June of 2021 at Serauxmen Stadium.

Spears, a native of Chicago who lives in San Diego, has previously been pitching coach for the Victoria HarbourCats and Port Angeles Lefties of the WCL. He has coached many pro pitchers both in the WCL and in his work with athletes in Southern California, and also while working at Steele Canyon High School and the NAIA-level San Diego Christian College.

“Mike’s knowledge of the WCL — from recruiting, to the travel in the league, to the nuances of the WCL — will be invaluable for us in getting ready for this first season in Nanaimo,” said Frady, a veteran of 34 years as a college coach. “He brings knowledge and energy, and he’s determined to make pitchers better so they can advance in the game.”

Spears, 47, was a college lefty who went on to throw at the independent pro level, including two years in the Prairie League (Saskatoon Smokin’ Guns, WestMan Greyowls), and with Bend in the Western League. Spears was with the HarbourCats in 2017, helping that team to the WCL final series, and then joined the Lefties for 2019, where he was selected as the pitching coach for the North Division in the 2019 WCL All-Star game.  He is a former police officer who is certified as a trainer, including crossfit.

“I really enjoyed the year I spent on Vancouver Island, and being asked to return and work with Coach Frady — I couldn’t pass that up,” said Spears, who is married with two daughters, one now in college. “I know how the organization works, they do things the right way. I’m excited to work with people in the community and make the NightOwls a success from the start.”

Coach Frady will add to the coaching staff as the season draws closer toward the anticipated June 4, 2021 official debut.
