NANAIMO — The bats came out at night following a rain cloud Saturday at Serauxmen Stadium.

The Nanaimo NightOwls pounded out 11 hits in a convincing 8-2 win over the visiting Redmond Dudes — after players and coaches from both teams pitched in to get the field ready after a morning cloudburst. Neither team wanted the night off, and the entertaining game that ensued was worth every rake, shop vac and bag of diamond dry.

Wylie Waters was 3-3 with two runs, while Lucas Laukkanen was 2-4 in his first start for the NightOwls. Cassidy Watt and Aaron Marsh had doubles, and Tui Ickes was 1-3 with two runs and a walk, and two runs driven in. Ryder Florence walked four times.

The NightOwls got quality outings from Anthony Porcellato, Jakin Rohne, Landon Welter, Aiden Wood, Kai Hanasaki and Hayden Cuthbertson, as the team used the game to tune up the staff for the next regular season action, which starts Tuesday.

The two teams close out the non-league series on Sunday afternoon (1pm) at Serauxmen Stadium. The NightOwls will host the Victoria HarbourCats for games Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday at Serauxmen Stadium, part of the ReMax Generation Alex Burns Real Estate Island Cup, with the HarbourCats leading 2-1 in the head-to-head series. The NightOwls then head to Portland next weekend for a three-game series.
