We now know when the ‘Owls will be landing.
The Nanaimo NightOwls, an expansion entry in the West Coast League for collegiate summer baseball, have their 2022 schedule ready for activity in planning for visiting teams, special promotional events, and welcoming mid-Island fans to historic Serauxmen Stadium.
After the planned 2021 debut season was held off by the pandemic, the staff and ownership group behind the NightOwls (and Bars!) are excited to reveal the team will open with a road series at the Portland Pickles, May 31/June1/June 2, with the first home game at Serauxmen set for 6:35pm on Friday, June 3, against the Edmonton Riverhawks. The three-game series continues Saturday, June 4, and Sunday afternoon, June 5.
“Getting the schedule is like getting a flight plan, and that fits perfectly for how we plan the NightOwls to soar in Nanaimo,” said Managing Partner/GM Jim Swanson. “All the planning now goes into high gear — the events, the game times, the special plans, and our team’s travel through B.C., Alberta, Washington and Oregon. We can’t wait to get the NightOwls on the field, to start announcing players, and to let Head Coach Greg Frady and Pitching Coach Gorm Heimueller start their work.”
For those new to the WCL model, the NightOwls will play — between regular season and exhibition — 61 games over a 69 day period, including 33 home dates, including five weekends -opening weekend, closing weekend on August 5-7, and three weekends in between. There are busier spots in the home schedule, including mid-June with 12 home games in a 13-day span.
Teams visiting Serauxmen Stadium, other than fellow expansion entry Edmonton — the Ridgefield Raptors, Kelowna Falcons, Kamloops NorthPaws, the island rival Victoria HarbourCats, Yakima Valley Pippins, Bellingham Bells, and Port Angeles Lefties. A special series will happen with DUDES WEEKEND leading up to Father’s Day on Sunday, June 19, with the Redmond Dudes providing the opposition.
“So many plans and ideas have been worked on, now it becomes a reality,” said Swanson. “This will be a team Nanaimo can get behind, as season members, or companies supporting like we’ve already seen with Island Savings, Save On Foods, Mid-Island Co-op, Panago on Fourth, and many others.”
Season tickets and 10-game general admission flex packs for NightOwls baseball are now on sale! Please note that Serauxmen Stadium has limited reserved seating capacity so lock your seats in now for what is going to be an exciting season of baseball!
